So I’m sitting in bed, looking out my bedroom window, watching the last minutes of the sunset, welcoming the night and the long waited for weekend. I have thought about starting a blog for a while now, but have had so many different ideas of what to write about, so I have finally decided what to start with. My one true love, food.
My love of food started as a baby, apparently according to my mum I never ate baby food, every time that she tried to feed it to me I would not eat it. So one day I just took some of the vegetables that she was cutting and from then on she fed me fresh fruits and vegetables. When I was about five years old, my love of cooking was created. I went to stay with my aunt, a fabulous cook for a few weeks and came back home yearning for more. Starting off with mainly cupcakes and cutting up food (which I loved!), I was always bugging my mum to let me cook.
Now nothing much has changed, I cook dinner a few times a week, every now and then attempting food that sometimes doesn’t work out, but for me cooking is just a big experiment! Recipes are meant to be changed, food is meant to be created form nothing. Have you ever thought about how out of some flour egg and sugar you can create a cake? Yes I know there are more ingredients than that, but it is just such an awesome thing, that I can create something that is so delicious out of things that otherwise wouldn’t have a purpose. The other week I attempted to make marshmallow for the first time, I don’t even like marshmallow. For me, it wasn’t about the end result but the enjoyment of trying something new, something totally different to anything I had ever cooked before. Of course it sort of failed, the marshmallow was lovely and bouncy, but after about an hour, all of the icing sugar that I dusted it in dissolved, and I was left with a sloppy, slimy mess for a week. Might not try making marshmallows for a while now.
My favourite things to cook are desserts, especially French desserts. I love how light and full of flavour French desserts are. If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life it would be raspberry bavarois, a French creamy jelly-type thing. I don’t really know how to explain it, but ever since I found the recipe in Manu Fieldel’s “Manu’s French Kitchen”, I have been totally and utterly in love. I make it all the time, whenever we have people over for dinner I see it as my chance to create heaven in a glass, to delight our guests senses with beautiful food. I feel like French food is so diverse, you have the generic buttery croissants, garlicky “escargots” and baguettes filled with cheese, but if you look deeper into French cuisine you will find a pool of recipes from tarts, soups and cakes to slow roasted meats and salads. There is just so much to explore, and most of all, an endless amount of food to taste!
Moving on from that ramble about French food, I want to talk about my admiration for the Japanese cuisine. After a two week trip to Japan last September I have come to appreciate the light flavours of Japanese food. The simplicity of dishes such as a Miso soup with tofu and seaweed, rice with fried mushrooms, or my favourite Gyoza (pork and cabbage dumplings pictured below) really excite me. Even simply barbecued corn on a stick is so delectable, and also healthy! Some Japanese desserts are inspired by French desserts, the heart shaped dessert below is filled with something very similar to the raspberry bavarois I was talking about earlier, It has been covered in a thin jelly and added berries and macaron, it tasted even better than it looks! You may think that food having so few ingredients would be bland and boring, but these ingredients shine through, so are the stars of the dishes. It is all about fresh produce and light flavours. Not much of Japanese food is strong in flavour, their desserts are not full of sugar like Australian or American ones. The light and small portions are perfect so that you have enough room to eat many dishes, and excite your palate with unexpected flavours and textures.
So from this blog, I think that you can probably tell I like food. And if you have read this far I am guessing you might too! Over time I would love for this blog to expand, I plan to share recipes and also frequently talk about my thoughts on life in general. Beauty, fashion, DIY, movies, makeup, cake decorating, party planning, holidays and trips out with friends are all things that I plan to post about soon. Also candles, I will talk a lot about them, I may have a slight candle fetish hahah…. If you have anything that you would like me to talk about in future posts, or would just like to chat I would love for you to comment below to continue the chatter. The sun is now long gone…
A bientôt!
